People move from time to time and they move items from time to time also. There are some general moving companies that handle a variety of items and there are moving companies that only ship certain types of items. These companies are know as specialty carriers or specialty transporters.
People sometimes use ship freight. They often use freight forwarders to find the best rate for their freight shipments. People also ship household goods and appliances and usually use van lines who specialize in shipping household goods and or appliances. Some people ship livestock such as cows, pigs and horses. There are specialty transporters that handle livestock shipments throughout the United States.Specialty transporters have a variety of trucks and trailers that they used to handle freight, household goods and livestock shipments. They can use box vans, trucks with trailers known as hot shot rigs and 18 wheel trucks for large loads or heavy freight. These transport companies have the right logistical equipment to secure loads in these various types of trucks and trailers.
It is important to understand the various specialized transporters areas of expertise in handling the types of loads that they generally ship. You would not want to contact a freight company to ship a horse. Conversely, you would not want to contact a livestock transporter to ship refrigerators or or other heavy freight. Like most things in life, if you do your research you will find the right type of transporter for the items that you plan to ship. It is always good to checkout a number of transporters who specialize in a given type of shipment to make sure you are getting quality service at an affordable price. So if you are moving a motorcycle, you want to contract with a motorcycle moving company that has the right kind of logistical equipment for handling motorcycle shipments. One thing to look for is that the transporter has either a ramp gate for a lift gate for loading and unloading your vehicle. Sometimes transporters only have small ramps or lift gates and if your powersports vehicle is too large they may require a dock or forklift on both ends. Always ask the transporter if they will have the ability to load and unload your vehicle without requiring a dock on either end. That way there will be no surprises at the pick up and delivery locations.
Motorcycle movers will have their trailers rigged specifically for handling motorcycle shipments. They will have an E-trac system in the floors and the walls where they can tie the bikes down to while they are in transit. Some transporters also use wooden or metal pallets that they mount the bikes to while they are in transit. Most motorcycle moving companies will not travel on dirt or gravel roads so you want to make sure both the pick up and delivery location have paved roads. Some motorcycle shipping companies use 18-wheel trucks and might have difficulty getting to a residence. If that is the case they will plan to meet you somewhere close by where they have access for their large truck.
